More than years ago, GALLERY5X7 first introduced a tiered pricing structure (see post “Why does GALLERY5X7 suggest a tiered pricing structure?”) based on these foundational beliefs:

    • creators of handcrafted, often one-of-a-kind alternative process photographic prints should be compensated fairly for their work
    • many artists struggle to set reasoned prices for their work, potentially undervaluing unique artwork to establish themselves in the marketplace, or overvaluing initial work before establishing a reputation
    • buyers and collectors of prints want affordable access to work from new, emerging artists and lessor-known creators, allowing the assembly and expansion of their collections for added personal and investment value
    • many artists also want to have affordable access to work from their peers and photographers they follow
    • creation of a community of artists with a collecting mindset is critical to nurturing an expanding and enduring marketplace for alternative process photography.

We still believe in each of these concepts. We also recognize that this tiered pricing structure, while beneficial to artists with less experience selling their work in a gallery, did not offer the pricing flexibility some represented artists desire. Publishing print prices on our site set higher than a prospective buyer/collector expects discourages discussion and engagement that might otherwise lead to sales. Perhaps even more importantly, the static pricing structure likely represents an obstruction to the GALLERY5X7 mission – fostering direct communication between artist and potential collector.

“GALLERY5X7 facilitates direct connections between artists and collectors as we believe this approach establishes a personal connection and trust that can lead to long-term relationships – relationships that we intend to foster, not get between.  We hope you will find our “get the gallery out of the way” approach refreshing!  Sales inquiries are passed directly to the represented artist and all transactions (pricing negotiations, purchase arrangements, shipping of prints, etc.) are conducted by the artists and purchaser directly.”

We are announcing that artists now have full control over pricing of their work on GALLERY5X7 and are free to negotiate all terms directly with potential customers. Starting Oct. 1, 2021, all references on our site and in promotional messages to print prices have been replaced with a call to action – “Contact The Artist.”

When a GALLERY5X7 site visitor enters an artist’s gallery and views available prints in a portfolio, next to each image (and beneath the description) instructions direct the visitor to “Click on the image to connect with the artist for additional print details and to inquire about purchasing this print.”  From there, additional instructions direct the visitor to “Click ‘Contact The Artist’ button to ask for additional print details and to arrange a purchase.”  Prospective buyers are then able to enter contact information and a message which will be sent to the artist for follow-up.

These changes to the GALLERY5X7 pricing structure will bring our represented artists more opportunities for print sales, and encourage buyers and collectors to engage our artists in conversation and negotiate pricing, display options and delivery terms.
